Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.
An area of garden and parkland around Peamore House. The Exminster Tithe Apportionment records names such as Front Lawn and North Lawn, as well as land not subject to tithes.
Swete, J. (ed. Gray T. + Rowe, M.), 1997, Travels in Georgian Devon. The Illustrated Journals of the Reverend John Swete. Vol. 1, 55-56 (Monograph). SDV341166.
Swete sketched the house and front lawn in 1794 from just within the gateway from the road. He tells us that Peamore House was now the residence of Sam Strode, who had leased it from Henry Hippesley Coxe. The property had previously been owned by the Northleigh family but had been acquired by the Coxes following the death of Margaret Northleigh in 1773. According to Swete, its 'chief beauty..lies in the undulating form of its grounds..in its woods, groves and trees - and in a quarry, which surrounded by a thicket of high towering oaks, beech etc is one of the grandest and most romantic objects in the country'.

In 1789 Rev John Swete wrote that it was ‘a spot of no common beauty’: he noted that ‘the chief beauty of Peamore lies in the undulating form of its grounds, rising and falling in the regular alteration of hills and dales - in its woods, groves and trees’. A map in the Somerset Record Office shows the Parkland in the eighteenth century. There is a painting of Peamore dated 1804 by Francis Towne in the Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester.

Peamore Park (that part to the west of the A379), Alphington
Summary
A mid- to late-C18 Picturesque park and Sublime pleasure ground, incorporating probable earlier features including an avenue and fishpond. The Picturesque layout is likely to have accompanied the rebuilding of the earlier house on the site in the C18. The grounds were further developed in the early C19 in similar Picturesque character, possibly with some design influence from G S Repton, who remodelled the house in the 1820s, the landscape reaching its zenith by 1842.
Reasons for Designation
The western part of Peamore Park is registered at Grade II for the following principal reasons: * Date and rarity: as a landscape laid out in phases from around the mid-C18 to early to mid-C19, where the general form and framework, and thus its character, remain legible;
* Representativity: a good example of a Picturesque country house landscape which utilises natural topography to great effect and includes the sublime pleasure ground of The Rock;
* Group value: with the Grade II listed Peamore House, forming the gothic centrepiece to the principal public view from the east, as well as the unlisted lodge and keeper’s cottage, and the arch, steps and walls at The Rock;
* Documentation: several primary accounts, sketches and paintings of the landscape from the late-C18 and early-C19 offer an insight into the contemporary experience of the landscape.
See listing description for full history and details.
Dated first registered as a park and garden: 19th July 2024. Date of most recent amendment: 22nd October 2024

Notification that, having taken into account all the representations made, and completed an assessment of the site, the western part of the landscape at Peamore Park has been added to the Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England. The site is now listed at Grade II.
Peamore Park is considered to be an accomplished Picturesque country house landscape that utilises the natural topography around the house and survives well, despite some loss and change. Its documented history adds to its interest, as does the evolved history of the main house and wider estate.
It was recommended for registration at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Date and rarity: as a landscape laid out in phases from around the mid-C18 to early to mid-C19, where the
general form and framework, and thus its character, remain legible;
* Representativity: a good example of a Picturesque country house landscape which utilises natural
topography to great effect and includes the sublime pleasure ground of The Rock;
* Group value: with the Grade II listed Peamore House, forming the gothic centrepiece to the principal public
view from the east, as well as the unlisted lodge and keeper’s cottage, and the arch, steps and walls at the
Rock;
* Documentation: several primary accounts, sketches and paintings of the landscape from the late-C18 and
early-C19 offer an insight into the contemporary experience of the landscape.

Notification that, following a review, the entry for Peamore Park (that part to the west of the A379) on the Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England has been amended.
REASONS FOR DESIGNATION DECISION
Peamore Park (that part to the west of the A379) is recommended for amendment, for the following principal reasons:
* to amend the boundary at the north-east to exclude a single parcel of land that has lost its parkland character, and which does not contribute to the special interest of the site;
* to note the information within one of the listed sources is incorrect, and to make other minor textual changes
