Once a private house which, from 1839 - 1866, belonged to the Hitchcock family who owned the Higher and Lower Woollen Mills. The house was then called Hawthornden and had a large garden with a gardener's cottage (83 East Street). During the late 1940s or early 1950s it was used as a 'summer school', and for the last 15-20 years has been used as a residential home for the elderly.

Mid 19th century. Two storeys, attics and basement, stuccoed. Hipped slate roof with modillion cornice. Three sashes with verticals only. End quoins. Massive granite Tuscan portico. Cast iron spear railings to forecourt.
