Once a private house which, from 1839 - 1866, belonged to the Hitchcock family who owned the Higher and Lower Woollen Mills. The house was then called Hawthornden and had a large garden with a gardener's cottage (83 East Street). During the late 1940s or early 1950s it was used as a 'summer school', and for the last 15-20 years has been used as a residential home for the elderly.
