Fort House was described on a sales poster in 1806 as an 'excellent and modern stone built house' with kitchen, dining room, parlour and library on the ground floor, a drawing room and five bedrooms on the first floor, and more rooms on the second floor. It also had a brewhouse, outhouses, a garden and a shrubbery. The house was altered and refurbished during the second half of the 19th century, however the back staircase is typical of the late 18th century, and apart from the windows facing East Street and the bows facing west, the construction of all other windows is of the 18th century. The cornices and plasterwork are also of an 18th century design. A house called The Fort in South Molton was mentioned in 1692 and1780.
