Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

Leat shown on the 19th century map running northwest from a weir at ST15920063 to a pond at ST15670099.

Wessex Archaeology, 1994, Dowell Street, Honiton: Archaeological Evaluation (Report - Evaluation). SDV325664.

An archaeological evaluation in 1994 prior to a residential development revealed a clay-lined leat running southeast to northwest parallel to 'Dowell Street' from a weir on 'The Glissage' stream to the 'River Otter'. The leat is shown on a 1780 plan of Honiton and on the 1842 Tithe Map. It was still visible on the aerial photographs of 1946. Two small parallel ditches aligned north-south were excavated and both contained iron slag. One ditch also contained medieval pottery. It was concluded that the site formed part of an industrial suburb lying outside the planned medieval town of Honiton.
