Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

'Grotto' shown to the north-west of the Naval Establishment.

Ordnance Survey, 1904 - 1906, Second Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch Map (Cartographic). SDV325644.

Small square building shown set back from the south side of the footpath overlooking the River Dart.

Collings, A. G., 2001, Archaeological Assessment of Proposed Dartmouth Sewage Treatment Scheme, 8 (Report - Assessment). SDV336229.

A grotto is indicated on an estate map of 1812 and on the 1888 Ordnance Survey map. Modern maps show a structure with no indication of its former function.

Ordnance Survey, 2013, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV350786.

Brown, J., 2013, Mr Seale's Woods: The Eighteenth Century Landscape of Mount Boone, Dartmouth, 13-17 (Article in Serial). SDV357310.

When the Reverend John Swete visited the gardens in 1792 he described a grotto 'where was a tolerable collection of the common sort of spars - and where was placed, a table sadly daubed with painting, which was not at all in unison.' The Grotto referred to by Swete survives in the woodland, though heavily overgrown. A Seale coat-of-arms survives within.

Baines, C., 2014, Grotto in Mr Seale's Gardens (Personal Comment). SDV357312.

It is not clear if the grotto shown on the late 19th century Ordnance Survey map is the same one described by Swete, as this is not depicted on the tithe map.
