Full description

South West Heritage Trust, 1838-1848, Digitised Tithe Maps and Transcribed Apportionments (Cartographic). SDV359954.

The Barton comprises several plots of land, recorded as house and front (541), garden (535) and courtlage (536-541) on the Poughill Tithe Apportionment. The fact that plot 535 is a garden may suggest that the adjoining building is a dwelling. The barn and horse engine house are shown to the west of the main farmstead. To the south-east of the farmhouse is a large pond and a small rectangular building recorded as Grants Cottage and garden (Plot 542) on the Tithe Apportionment.

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The Barton comprises the farmhouse with a semi-circular garden to the south. To the east, north and west of the farmhouse are a number of farmbuildings arranged around several yards. Comparison with the Tithe Map shows a number of buildings to have been added. The barn and horse engine house are still shown as is the pond but Grants Cottage is no longer extant.

Ordnance Survey, 1904 - 1906, Second Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch Map (Cartographic). SDV325644.

Comparison with the 1880s-1890s map shows the barn and roundhouse depicted on the earlier map to be no longer extant. A new range of buildings, described by Child as a barn and roundhouse is shown, slightly nearer to the main farmstead.

Child, P, 2003, Countryside Stewardship: Farm Buildings at the Barton, Poughill (Correspondence). SDV358785.

The farm buildings at The Barton form a courtyard to the north of the farmhouse. Most of the traditional farm buildings have been extensively altered and are due for conversion to holiday accommodation. The large building to the north-east of the house apparently contains moulded beams and the owners thought it was the previous house. A cartshed in the north-east corner of the farmyard is dated to c.1800. Immediately north of the farmhouse is a linhay and to the west of the main yard is a barn and roundhouse, now converted.
