'lower gatcombe farm' shown on the os 25" (1880) map is the centre of the settlement of 'gatcombe'. The farm is shown as 'gatcombe farm' on modern maps (os).

'gatcombe' was 'gatcumbe' in domesday + held by 'ansger the servant'. Before the conquest it was held by 'burgered'. In the c13 there was a church at gatcombe served by the vicar of colyton. In 1418 'bishop stafford' issued a license to 'hold divine service at the manor of gatcombe' (reichel).

'gatcombe' was known as 'gatcumba' in 1086, 'gotecomb' in 1282 + 'catcombe' in 1574. The name may come from 'goats valley' i. E. Where they were pastured (gover et al).
