Full description

Hollinrake, C. + Hollinrake, N., 2000, An Archaeological and Historical Desk Top Survey of Proposed Development Land at Willand, 19, fig 12 (Report - Assessment). SDV50299.

During a survey prior to development in 2000 a hollow way was identified running southeast from the western end of the track at ST03701151 to the field boundary at ST03781141 then southwest along the field boundary to the old railway line at ST03731139.

Stratascan, 2001, Geophysical Survey at Willand (Report - Geophysical Survey). SDV337963.

A magnetometer survey in 2001 showed several anomolies which could relate to archaeological activity as well as confirming the presence of the former hollow way.

Jones, P. + Valentin, J., 2006, Archaeological Evaluation of Land at Four Ways Cross, Willand, Devon, 13, fig 8 (Report - Evaluation). SDV337959.

An archaeological evaluation by means of trench excavation was carried out by Exeter Archaeology on land at Four Ways Cross, Willand. A large northwest-southeast aligned ditch recut was revealed in Trench 12, located in the position of a larger and earlier ditch. This feature was originally interpreted as a holloway and is shown on the 1838 Tithe Map as a field boundary. Both the original ditch and recut seem unusually large for a field boundary. The size and profile would normally be associated with an enclosure or territory boundary of prehistoric date. A single sherd of medieval pottery recovered from the recut suggests the reuse of an existing landscape feature.

Steinmetzer, M., 2008, Archaeological Excavation at Four Ways Cross, Willand, Devon 2007 (Phase 1) Post-Excavation Assessment Report and Updated Project Design, 4 (Report - Excavation). SDV344611.

A small number of medieval and post-medieval ditches were the latest features exposed on the site. These were arranged parallel to or at right angles to the current field system, suggesting a roughly contemporary date in origin. Other details: Figure 2.
