Prawle, about 30 metres above sea level is a beacon. Mentioned as 'Prenla' in 1066, 'Prahulle' in 1204. The name is thought to mean look-out hill. A chapel is mentioned here in the 1420s dedicated to St. Brendan, the Patron of Sailors. The chapel has disappeared but the natural site is on the great rock which bears Lloyd's Signal Station.
