Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880s, Ordnance Survey (Cartographic). SDV848.

Site of two short sections of diverging earthworks shown on OS 25" (1880s) map with a small rectangular building shown at SX43757307.

Buck, C., 2002, Devon Great Consols: Archaeological Assessment, 232-3, Figs 35,38 (Report - Assessment). SDV241758.

Two flat rod cuttings running west to east at Wheal Thomas/Watson mine are shown on the 19C maps. The survey in 2002 found the southern cutting running from SX43727304 to SX43907305 & the northern cutting running from SX43877306 to SX43747307. Th cuttings were 1m wide x up to 0.75m deep & damaged in places by forestry activity. Other details: Sites 376 & 376/1.

Wheal Thomas flat rod cutting and tunnel under track (SX4372173036 to SX43900 3049) and (SX4386873063 to SX4374173073). Cuttings are approx. 1m wide and cut into ground at varying depths (0.5 to 0.75m deep). The site damaged in places by forestry activity. The tunnel is sufficiently robust to take vehicles.
