Full description
Ordnance Survey, 1855-1895, First Edition 1:500 Town Map (Cartographic). SDV338879.
Three large buildings shown to the rear of 44 Fore Street.
Wessex Archaeology, 2003, Blundells Road, Tiverton, Devon: Archaeological Desk Based Assessment (Report - Assessment). SDV345760.
Passmore, A. J., 2006, Archaeological Evaluation and Recording at 44 Fore Street, Tiverton, Devon (Report - Evaluation). SDV337913.
Six evaluation trenches were excavated over the line of proposed foundation trenches and a watching brief undertaken during removal of foundations of the eastern boundary wall to the rear of 44 Fore Street. Deposits in the southern part of Trench 7 consisted of very loose dumps of silt containing slate, brick and tile. This material continued below a depth of 1-1.2 metres indicating that they were infilling a cellar within the building depicted at this location on the 1890 Ordnance Survey map. Generally, the earliest datable deposits were a series of late 16th or 17th century cultivation soils. Later deposits at the southern end of the site were dated to the 18th and 19th centuries and included material associated with the construction and demolition of industrial workshops, one of which, mentioned above, contained a cellar.
