Gover, J. E. B. + Mawer, A. + Stenton, F. M., 1932, The Place-Names of Devon: Part Two, 392 (Monograph). SDV337894.
The name Catkill may have its origins in the Old English 'Cadecan hyll'.
Wessex Archaeology, 2007, Historic Environment Audit of Devon County Farms. Pilot Project. Results of East Catkill Farm, Rose Ash, South Molton (Report - Assessment). SDV338186.
Historic environment audit of East Catkill Farm undertaken by Conservation Management, a division of Wessex Archaeology, for Devon County Council. East Catkill Farm is one of the 93 farm holdings which make up Devon County Farms Estate. The farm is located c1.25km south of Rose Ash and presently covers an area of c59 hectares on both sides of a moderately steep valley. The landscape of East Catkill Farm can be characterised by a mixture of medieval enclosures based on strip fields, modern enclosures created out of rough grazing ground, heath or moorland, and areas of broad-leaved plantation. The farmhouse, which may be of 16th or 17th century date, two of the barns and linhay are shown on the 1844 Tithe map and are a good example of continuity and survival in use. Map comparison indicates that a number of field boundaries have disappeared between the time of the Tithe Map and the present.
