William Brockedon was born in Totnes in 1787, in a small house almost close to the East Gate. The house is now known as the East Gate Inn.

Number 71 Fore Street in Totnes on the north side of the road. Formerly listed as Eastgate Inn. Early 19th century front to an older building. 3 storeys. 1 window. Welsh slate roof. Masonry party-walls of earlier building, Slate-hung timber-framed front with wide timber bands at floor levels. Flush-framed sash and casement windows. Shopfront with pilasters carrying small fascia-cornice; shop window with large panes. Raised and fielded panel door.
