Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

'Stone' shown near this location, marking northern corner of Topsham Barracks.

Ordnance Survey, 1904 - 1906, Second Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch Map (Cartographic). SDV325644.

War Department boundary stone number 2 shown approximately 160 metres north-east of present position.

Ordnance Survey, 1930 - 1939, Fourth Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch Map (Cartographic). SDV336668.

War Department boundary stones numbers 1 and 2 shown in area of current position.

Exeter Archaeology, 2001, Archaeological Assessment of a Proposed Development Site, Wyvern Barracks, Exeter, 4 (Report - Assessment). SDV342018.

The boundary stones around the barracks were also visited (where access was available) to assess the number of surviving stones. Of least 14 stones marked on various Ordnance Survey maps, 4 were observed. Two were outside the entrance on Barrack Road, one was on the corner of Barrack Road and Dryden Road and one was on the southeast corner adjacent to Topsham Road. The location and numbering of these stones differ to that shown on the Ordnance Survey maps, and it seems likely that of those that have not already been removed and 'lost', some have been reset in different positions. Other details: Figure 8.

Baines, C., 2009, War Department Boundary Stone 2 (Ground Photograph). SDV342093.

Stone is dated 1874.

Baines, C., 2009, Wyvern Barracks Boundary Stones (Personal Comment). SDV342088.

This boundary stone was shown opposite Gras Lawn, adjacent to number 3, on the early 20th century Ordnance Survey map. By the 1930s a row of houses had been built at the north end of the barracks, along the roadside, and the stone had been moved further south to the Barrack Road entrance.
