'Pit Orchard' shown to north of this area.
Exeter Archaeology, 2008, Archaeological Assessment of Land off Duke's Way, Axminster, Devon, 6 (Report - Assessment). SDV342566.
A plan dated 1776-8 shows a field to the west of the development area as 'Pit Close'. The nature of the pit is unknown, but possibly refers to a quarry site in this or an adjacent field. A pronounced kink in the northern boundary may reflect the presence of a pit. Other details: Site 11.
