Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The Tithe Map shows 'Higher Pudstone', which comprises a long barn structure next to the road, the farmhouse and a smaller building in the centre of the farm and a rectangular building on the eastern side of the farm. To the south of the farm is 'Taper's Estate', which consists of a single rectangular building, aligned east-west.

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The late 19th century historic map shows the farm, with an additional building south-east of the farmhouse.

Gover, J. E. B. + Mawer, A. + Stenton, F. M., 1932, The Place-Names of Devon: Part Two, 526 (Monograph). SDV337894.

Pudsham first appears in the Assizes of 1318 as 'Puttekesham'. It is mentioned in various documents throughout the middle ages spelt in different ways. It could mean Puttoc's ham(m) or the first element could come from the middle English word puttock meaning kite.

Belsey, P. M., 1983 - 1987, Buckland In The Moor Parish Checklist, 2/3/1985 (Un-published). SDV345904.

Higher Pudsham situated at 280 metres approximately 1.5 kilometres from the church, with land sloping upwards to Pudsham Down and below the farmhouse towards the steep wooded valley of the East Webburn. Higher Pudsham now farms the former lands of Lower Pudsham, Beara and Stone. Fields are divided by well-maintained hedge banks and walled hedge banks and there are several slotted gateposts still in situ. See worksheet for photos and historical references.

Dartmoor National Park Authority, 1993 - 1997, Dartmoor National Park Authority Farmstead Survey 1993-1997 (Report - Survey). SDV344544.

Farmstead included in survey. Visited on 06/03/1995.

Ordnance Survey, 2016, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV359352.

The modern mapping shows 'Higher Pudsham', which retains all of the buildings depicted on the Tithe Map, but the newer one in the south-east of the farm shown on the later 19th century historic map is now gone.
