Full description

Buck, C., 2006, Gawton Mine, Devon: Archaeological Assessment, 25 (Report - Assessment). SDV344672.

Shaft shown on 1867 Bedford Estates survey map, and named 'North Shaft' on an abandoned plan of the mine, which was named 'Wheal Gawton' on the survey map. A circular stone (four courses) and earth wall, 1.2 metres high and 1.0 metre wide, surrounds an opening in the ground measuring 4.0 metres by 3.8 metres at ground level. At a depth of 2.0 metres below ground level a shaft, 1.0 metres by 2.0 metres, inclines to the south. At a depth of approximately 8.0 metres below ground level the shaft seems to be flooded. Other details: Figure 35, site 6.

Ordnance Survey, 2010, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV344030.

Clive Meaton, 2023, Gawton Mine, Devon- Costed and Prioritised Proposals for Capital Works for the Conservation and Management of Gawton Mine Scheduled Monument (Redacted Costs Version), 39 (Report - Survey). SDV366131.

The North Shaft was illustrated on historic Ordnance Survey maps and labelled on an abandoned mine plan. In 2006, a stone and earth wall measuring approximately 1.2 metres high was identified, surrounding an opening in the ground measuring approximately 4 metres by 3.8 metres. At a depth of circa 2 metres a wide narrow shaft was recorded inclining to the south. The shaft appeared to be flooded from a depth of circa 8 metres. Two trees were recorded growing out of the opening.
The shaft was found to be located within conifer woodland and not particularly visible. The protective walled collar was considered sufficient to restrict public access, although it was recommended that the trees were removed as part of woodland management. The North Shaft was located beyond the Site boundary so was not surveyed. Other details: Site No. 6
