Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1904 - 1906, Second Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch Map (Cartographic). SDV325644.

Quarry shown to south and east of reservoir.

Buck, C., 2006, Gawton Mine, Devon: Archaeological Assessment, 37-8 (Report - Assessment). SDV344672.

One of a number of small quarries distributed across the mine, usually the result of needing stone for the erection of buildings. The back wall is 5 metres high (with a deeper floor from track level), 12 metres wide and the floor is approximately 10 metres in depth, but large trees are growing out of the rear and back edge, making it unstable. Other details: Figure 36, site 26.3.

Buck, C., 2006, Gawton Mine, Devon: Impact Assessment Report, 32-33 (Report - Assessment). SDV348353.

The Tamar Valley Mining Heritage Project has proposed that a programme of building conservation and public safety works be undertaken to a number of sites within Gawton Quay and Mine. The quarry is immediately adjacent to the main trail that leads to the upper section of Gawton Mine (ore dressing site). A small amount of tree and vegetation clearance may be necessary to reduce the likelihood of structural instability, and part of the eastern side of the quarry will need fencing as there is a vertical drop of 3.0 metres. Other details: Figure 4, site 26.3.

Ordnance Survey, 2010, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV344030.

Clive Meaton, 2023, Gawton Mine, Devon- Costed and Prioritised Proposals for Capital Works for the Conservation and Management of Gawton Mine Scheduled Monument (Redacted Costs Version), 65-66, Photograph 10 (Report - Survey). SDV366131.

A Quarry is located at SX 45328 68838. In 2006 this quarry was found to have a back wall approximately 5 metres high and measured approximately 12 metres by 10 metres, with large trees growing out of the rear and back edge, appearing to cause some instability in the quarry faces. Recommendations were included for tree clearance and protective fencing. The Quarry was the only one located within the Site. The quarry remains overgrown with trees and vegetation, although the exposed rear rock face made the quarry readily legible, and there were no obvious collapses or weaknesses to the exposed faces. The Quarry was found to be in generally good condition. The Quarry will contain very limited historic and evidential value, compared to other features across the Site. Other details: Site No. 26.3.
