Full description
Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.
Two buildings shown to the south-west of King's Shaft.
Buck, C., 2006, Gawton Mine, Devon: Archaeological Assessment, 60 (Report - Assessment). SDV344672.
These buildings are not shown on the 1867 Bedford Estates map but are shown on the 1884 Ordnance Survey map. They are probably related to the dressing of ore prior to the material going to the calciners, and it is likely that there is a jigger house to separate ore from waste rock in one of these buildings. The Ordnance survey map appears to show that these were open sided buildings, probably of timber and galvanised roof construction, which would leave little evidence of their existence. There are no visible remains of these buildings, however there may well be remnants of the lower walls or foundations within the site. Other details: Figures 8, 36, site 65.
Clive Meaton, 2023, Gawton Mine, Devon- Costed and Prioritised Proposals for Capital Works for the Conservation and Management of Gawton Mine Scheduled Monument (Redacted Costs Version), 164-165, Photograph 94 (Report - Survey). SDV366131.
These buildings are not illustrated on the 1867 Bedford Estates map but are shown on the 1884 Ordnance Survey map, so probably date from the early 1880s, being related to ore preparation before roasting in the calciners. The cartographic evidence indicates that these buildings were open sided and of timber and galvanised roof construction. In 2006 no visual evidence for these buildings was found, other than cleared areas within a large rubble mound which may have represented their former locations.
The area was found to be densely overgrown, and as described in 2006. It is likely that buried structural remains and associated deposits survive. The Site of Dressing Floor Buildings are considered to be of low significance. The site should be left undisturbed, and no intrusive works allowed. Should sufficient funds become available then vegetation clearance, assessment, interpretation, and conservation should be considered. Other details: Site No. 65.
