The winding engine house was probably constructed during the 1830s, at the same time as the pumping engine house. A vertical depth of about 4 metres of rock, for a length of about 20 metres, was cut specifically to site the steam winder engine to wind ore from Engine Shaft. When the incline plane shaft was created, the winding rope was possibly turned around 90 degrees to go down the incline plane, or alternatively linked to one of the engine house buildings to the north-east. There is no above ground evidence for the winding engine house, nor the associated buildings, although the foundations may remain. Other details: Figures 6-8, 15, site 11.
