Monument Type(s) and Dates

  • SHAFT (XIX - 1843 AD to 1843 AD (Between))

Full description

Buck, C., 2009, South Hooe Mine, Bere Alston, Devon: Archaeological Assessment, 43-4 (Report - Assessment). SDV344692.

The incline plane shaft dates from 1843, when it was being sunk to provide a more efficient means of hauling ore, providing ventilation and easier access to the deep lodes under the River Tamar. It was sunk to a final depth of 125 fathoms (nearly 750 feet). The shaft is choked at the surface and is visible as a shallow dip in the ground, 0.1-0.2 metres deep and approximately 1.5 metres in diameter, in the upper (grassed) garden of a house. Other details: Figures 6, 15, site 14.

Gould, R., 2009, South Hooe Mine, Bere Alston, West Devon: A Report on the Results of a Desktop Study and a Surface Reconnaisance Inspection in Relation to Past Metalliferous Mining Activity, 6, 9 (Report - non-specific). SDV347326.

This shaft was located to the west of the Engine House, sunk vertically to connect with an Inclined Plane. The mine plan suggests the shaft is rectangular and measures approximately 2.5 by 2.0 metres. No record of any permanent secure capping has been found, and there is no visible sign of the shaft, however a short distance to the north the lawn has settled slightly. A second surface depression and a small hole were also identified in the bottom of the steep bank to the south. Other details: Figures 3-10; photo 4.
