Main Stores. This block is shown on the earliest known Air Ministry site plan (7633/40, dated June 1940). It has an 'E'-shaped plan, and consequently is in four parts. The west wing functioned as a technical stores for aero-engine and MT (?Motor Transport) spares, while the east wing housed a barrack stores for clothing and barrack equipment, and included an issue area and fitting space. The central wing, which normally would be detached from the main block, is called a fabric store, and held airframe components. Office accommodation, packing case store and a receipt and unpacking area made up the north elevation.
Construction is of 28 foot span temporary brick with both east and west wings heing 10 bays long with external piers at 10 foot centres. Roof trusses were originally timber, but these may have been replaced in steel. Roof cladding is corrugated asbestos sheeting. The fabric store is also constructed in temporary brick, but has 20 foot high walls covering 4-5 bays.
The building has now been sub-divided into the following: east wing: Airport Auto valet, fabric store: Airways Flight Training, west wing: BAC Express.
Fair condition. Other details: Map 6, Plate 12, Site 228.
