Full description
Waterhouse, R., 2006, Archaeological Excavations at Morwellham, 2002-2006 (Report - Excavation). SDV344984.
One of two substantial granite-built turntable pits revealed during excavations on Lime Kiln Quay. The upper of the two pits contained substantial remains of the cast iron support structures for the turntable it had once contained, bolted to timber frames. One of the timber baulks which supported the incline rails survived in the pit, showing the incline to have been at an angle of 23 degrees from the horizontal. Since the excavations, some of the missing parts of the upper turntable have been found in the Morwellham finds store, including part of one of the rails and a runner wheel. These were probably discovered when the quays were cleared in the early 1970s. The turntable appears to date from 1816-17, at the time of the Tavistock Canal incline. Both use the same design of cast iron rails and the plateways on the Limekiln Quay are directly linked to the Canal Incline, showing them to be of the same date.
