Full description

Farnell, A. J., 2009, An Archaeological Trench Evaluation on Land Between Hill Barton Industrial Estate and the A3052 Exeter to Sidmouth Road, 3,10-12 (Report - Evaluation). SDV345091.

The terminus of a ditch, aligned north-east to south-west and apparently curvilinear, was encountered during excavation of trench 10, approximately 15 metres from the southern end. It was approximately 1.6 metres wide and 0.39 metres deep with 1.3 metres of length exposed in plan. Its profile consisted of moderately sloping sides with a gradual break of slope to a concave base. Several sherds of Roman pottery were recovered from the fill. This is one of a group of features which are likely to represent boundaries and divisions associated with a rural settlement or farmstead dating from the first to the fourth centuries. Other details: Figures 5, 6/1.
