Sewage from the terminal building and two civilian hangars was originally stored in septic tanks just north of the terminal, but when the airport became an RAF station a new sewage works was built on the north side of the landing ground. The existing drains were then connected to the new drainage system and the septic tanks disconnected and filled in. This then is the original Air Ministry sewage farm which became operational around June 1940, and is still in use.
Three circular septic tanks were built. At least one is where solid organic matter is liquefied by bacterial action, before passing to a percolating filter tank where further bacterial purification takes place. Upstream of the percolating tanks are eight humus drying beds. The only building extant is a small temporary brick tool shed.
The tool shed is in fair condition. The septic tanks and drying beds are in good condition. Other details: Sites 130-133, 135; Map 10.
