Full description

Farnell, A. J., 2009, An Archaeological Trench Evaluation on Land Between Hill Barton Industrial Estate and the A3052 Exeter to Sidmouth Road, 3-4, 10-12 (Report - Evaluation). SDV345091.

A ditch, aligned north-west to south-east and with a 'V' shaped profile, was located at the western end of trench 19. It measured 1.42 metres wide and 0.72 metres deep, and was exposed in plan to a length of 9.6 metres. Abundant sherds of Romano-British pottery were recovered from the secondary fill, in addition to fragments of roof tile. Several sherds of Roman pottery were also recovered from the tertiary fill, which represented the final infilling of the ditch. This is one of a group of features which are likely to represent boundaries and divisions associated with a rural settlement or farmstead dating from the first to the fourth centuries. Other details: Figures 5, 7/5; plates 3-4.
