The Allan-Williams turret, a revolving domed structure, was originally located at Exmouth Docks where it formed part of the town's coastal defence during the Second World War. It has been partially restored and is now exhibited on the town's esplanade. It is generally agreed that two service men operated from a chamber beneath the dome, accessed through a trapdoor at the rear. One was armed with a light machine gun or light anti-aircraft weapon, the other rotated and assisted the gunner. The weapons projected through one of two apertures, and these (now sealed) can clearly be seen, one just above ground and the other in the roof of the structure. Steel shutters protected the apertures when not in use.
