Full description
Berry, N., 2006, Archaeological and Historic Landscape Survey of Wembury Point and The Mewstone, Wembury, Devon, 20 (Report - Survey). SDV345992.
Large raised terrace at the base of the hillside on the south-east part of the property. Part of the Naval Military Training School complex. The overall site is approximately 45 metres south-west to north-east by 40 metres north-west to south-east. It is approached up a short length of road or ramp from the east side.There are two further raised areas on the terrace to the north-east and south-west. It is possible they are building platforms, as the south-west terrace has lumps of concrete visible on the surface. The north-east area is probably a dump of sand. It is rumoured to be the site of a bunker, but this area may have been substantially raised to protect activities from the firing range immediately adjacent. There are steep scarps of 3-5 metres to the south-west and south-east sides, indicative of the earthmoving required to construct the terrace. Other details: Map; site inventory no. 047.
