Name:Cairn in Ausewell Woods, south-east of Ausewell Rocks

Summary

Eastern cairn of a pair south-east of Ausewell Rocks. Recorded by the Ordnance Survey in 1960. This cairn measures 18m in diameter and has a crater-like centre with two trenches driven from the margin towards the centre, and 3 small round chambers like hut circles within the margin; all modern disturbances.

Full description

Worth, R. H., 1922, 41st Report of the Barrow Committee, 69 (Article in Serial). SDV231132.

Cairn, mutilated, in shooting preserved, in plantation. Diameter 18.3m, height 2.1m. Siting, slope.

(24/03/1960) Eastern cairn: This has a crater-like centre with two trenches driven from the margin towards the centre, and 3 small round chambers like hut circles within the margin. Diameter at base about 60 ft., and height 7'-8'.
(18/05/1960) The two cairns are as described by above except that both have diameter of 18.0m.
Also modern are the small circular shelters, central depression and trenches which have mutilated the eastern cairn.
A 25" survey has been made.

(August 1961) Two cairns at Auswell Rocks. Dug into and misshapen surrounded by trees. Eastern cairn: hollow in middle, two trenches from margin to centre; three small round chambers within margins of cairn, two irregular openings. Height 2.1m-2.4m, diameter 18.3m.
