The historic parish boundary between Ottery St Mary and Feniton parishes crosses the site, and a distinct 'kink' in its course 150 metres to the east may relate to a medieval enclosure. This boundary was described in a charter of 1061, and later became the medieval manor and hundred boundary. Several of these 'kinks' are noted on the boundary of Ottery St Mary parish, and it is suggested they respected prominent local landmarks. The enclosure around which the boundary goes is referred to as 'Common Close' on both the Feniton and Ottery St Mary Tithe Maps, and may have been neutral ground for both parishes. Other details: Figures 2-3.
