Haytor Vale Hostelry. In 1825 a hostelry was built for the workers in the nearby Haytor granite quarries, which were opened at the same time. The hostelry is now the Rock Inn. Merrivale is a similar village entirely built for the workers of the quarries.

The Rock Inn, formerly a coaching inn and then hotel, was built, along with the surrounding cottages, at the instigation of George Templer around the year 1826. the cottages were to house the quarrymen working at Templer's quarry at nearby Haytor, and the purpose-built inn also provided for them.
