The Castle Hotel, 1 Fore Street. Public House. About 1835 with late 19th century alterations. Stuccoed, under slate hipped roof. Left-hand stack with brick shaft. 3 storeys.
Front: Symmetrical 3-window range, under slightly overhanging eaves, and with stone quoins. Hornless sash windows to 1st and 2nd floors; formerly 6 panes per sash, but now only 2. Central portico of circa 1835 with 2 debased Tuscan columns with pilasters, supporting moulded canopy; round-headed doorway with panelled reveals. The windows received their architraves in the late 19th century (or early 20th century): plain to 2nd floor, but shouldered to first and ground floors, with capitals and keystones; the ground-floor sashes (of 1835) were removed and replaced by tripartite windows, with 4 little top lights, and now with one pane to each main light. The Castle Hotel makes a significant contribution to the townscape at the top of Fore Street. Date listed: 11th June 1986.
