Summary

Dates to at least the 17th century, although may be 15th century, according to one source. Originally a farm cottage and blacksmith's shop, inn was extended and altered in 19th century. The famous escapee, Frank 'Axeman' Mitchell is said to have stayed here, his bills paid by one of the notorious Kray twins.

Dating from the 15th century, the Peter Tavy Inn developed from a farm cottage and a blacksmith's shop. The latter is now the serving bar and in one corner of it, in the ceiling, used to be a trap door leading to the bedroom above. Frank 'Axeman' Mitchell, the only man to escape from Princetown prison without recapture, is said to have stayed here, with his bills paid by one of the notorious Kray Twins.

17th century inn extended and altered in 19th century. Plastered stone rubble walls. Slate roof hipped to left end, gabled to right. Three rendered stacks; rubble lateral stack at rear, brick shaft on rubble base at right gable end and axial brick shaft.
Plan: originally two rooms probably with central passage; left-hand room heated by rear lateral fireplace, right-hand room by gable fireplace. Probably in the 19th century the house was extended by one small room to the left with a small one storey wing built in front of it in late 19th/early 20th centuries.
Exterior: Two storeys. Asymmetrical four window front of 20th century small-paned 1 and 2 light casements except for ground floor left-hand window which is original 3-light granite mullion. At centre is original chamfered granite doorway with segmental arch. 19th century heavy plank door. Single storey gabled wing projects from left-hand end. Low range of 19th to 20th century outbuildings projects from right-hand end.
Interior: left-hand room has rebuilt granite fireplace with cambered arch of granite voussoirs. Very insubstantial closely-spaced and wany beams, which are chamfered (Listed 1967). Other details: LB UID: 92815.
