'Halshanger on site of a Manor House' marked.

The original manor house was built in the 12th-13th century and was property of the Firth family. It was totally demolished in 1806; the present house being built on the site but with entirely new material in 1807. From description, it is likely that the staircase was probably Jacobean. This was said to have been damaged by troops billeted here during the Second World War resulting in it having to be removed. A small outbuilding at SX75787332 is very old (older than the original house?) and were probably associated with it.
Ordnance Survey, 2011, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV346129.
House marked on the modern Ordnance Survey map.
Newman, P., 2013, An Archaeological Assessment of Halshanger and Horridge Commons, Dartmoor, Devon, 8 (Report - Assessment). SDV356396.
Halsanger is first mentioned in documents of the 13th century. It was in existence, however, before this date and enclosued fields would have been established on the nearby slopes soon after the initial settlement was established.
