Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport has decided to add Bishopsteignton War Memorial to the List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest.


The Bishopsteignton War Memorial, Fore Street is recommended for listing at Grade II for the following
principal reasons:
Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community,
and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20;
Architectural interest: it is a thoughtful and well-executed design.

Application received to list this memorial and the assessment is now completed.

Bishopsteington’s war memorial was first erected to the commemorate those who died during the First World War. A stone flower vase dedicated to Private Clifford Edward Wallis who died in 1918 was placed next to the memorial. Later a stone plaque and flower vase was added at the base of the memorial to commemorate the Fallen of the Second World War.

The memorial stone at the top of a raised platform with steps leading up on either side from the pavement below. The flat base is surmounted by a tapering plinth, and a Celtic –style wheel cross. The plinth contains recessed panels. The front panel included lettering which reads-‘TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND THE IMMORTAL/ MEMORY OF THE BRAVE MEN OF/ BISHOPSTEIGNTON/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1919/ GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS/ THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS
FRIENDS’. The two side panels include the names of those who died, ordered by the date of their passing. In a well space below the memorial is a stone plaque that commemorated those who died during the Second World War, with lettering that reads-‘ALSO TO THE MEMORY OF THOSE/ WHO FELL IN THE SECOND WOLD WAR 1938-45’, with the names of the fallen set out below.

There are only a few instances in Devon where the location of a settlement's main war memorial is located in association with a non-conformist church. For example at Bishopsteignton the war memorial cross is located just outside of the Methodist churchyard.

First and Second World War monument, not listed. Granite ashlar base with granite cross on concrete plinth. Black inscription on granite. States 1914-19 war. Separate granite inscribed vase. Granite inscribed slab to forefront of memorial. The memorial is in good condition overall. Stone and pointing is generally good and the letters are clear. There is a bit of minor cracking to the render on the base of the front of the memorial and some cracking on the coping stone of nearby planting (left hand side) and little superficial cracking on left hand side steps. Minor work may be needed within 3 years.
