Almost fronting the tower (?St Saviour's Church) is a small detached building of great interest. It has a narrow court on the south side enclosed by a high wall. The upper part of this structure, a modern addition, was used as a police station. Underneath are two vaulted cells, medieval, and until 1894 used as the town jail. On its south face is a specimen of the town arms.

Smart, I. H., 1991, The Many Ancient Guildhalls of Dartmouth, 16-19 (Article in Serial). SDV340290.

At the end of the 18th century the gaol block was joined on to the south wall of the old guildhall. The end wall was pinned and rehung with slates when the guildhall was demolished in 1837. Built as one storey but an upper storey was added in 1854. Later used as a watch house and lock-up.
