The Taw Shipyard was Barnstaple's last link with the shipbuilding industry. In 1918, ferro-concrete barges were built and launched here. A ship of this construction saved 60% of the steel required in one of more conventional design. Steel ships were built here in the 1920s but the depression caused the shipyard to close and the industry to die out finally. Site now occupied by concrete works.
