Name:Hameldon Tor cairn

Summary

Monument comprises a 11m diameter cairn (up to 0.7m high), within an enclosed area 21m in diameter surrounded by bank (1.5m wide, up to 0.4m high). Northern edge of cairn denoted by several edge set stones indicating the presence of a kerb. Modern visitor cairn measuring 4.2m in diameter and 1.2m high on top of cairn, as well as an Ordnance Survey triangulation pillar lying to the north.

Ormerod, G. W., 1864, On the Hut Circles on the Eastern Side of Dartmoor, 305 (Article in Serial). SDV304174.

Ormerod notes several barrows on Hamildon Down.

Hameldon Tor Cairn. A denuded cairn (37 feet diameter) with kerb of large stones (citing A. Fox, 1950).
(20/03/1953) Cairn diameter 14.0m, height 0.7m with no surrounding ditch. The large kerbstones referred to by Fox exist on northern half only. The cairn has been mutilated by an Ordnance Survey trig pillar and a conical mound of small stones of evidently modern date.

(13/01/1971) Cairn on Hameldown Tor (diameter 14m, height 0.7m) Circular cairn. Remainder of kerb visible (11 stones). Remainder of cairn largely grassed over but head sized granite boulders visible (OS trig point and recent mound of stones on top).

Platform circle surmounted by cairn. Ring of kerb stones, 9.5m diameter internally, enclosing flat-topped mound 0.4m high upon which there is a cairn 4.5m diameter and 1.5m high. There is also a modern stone heap.
