A thatched house dating to the 18th century or earlier. It has a prominent front porch bearing the date 1763, which may be addition to an earlier building. Notification of an application to amend the listing description for the house to include the front wall and pier gate, known locally as the 'Lad's Wall'.

House shown with a prominent porch extending into the road. Alongside the house is an entrance leading to a courtyard range of buildings behind.

Bridge House House and shop. C18 and probably earlier. Whitewashed and rendered; thatched roof with plain ridge, gabled at ends, hipped to two storey porch; thatch replaced by slates to rear of ridge; left end brick stack, stack with brick shaft to first floor front projection the centre; front door to house to the left, the accommodation extending in a rear left wing at right angles to the main range. In the centre a two storey porch room on timber posts projects over the pavement. The porch, dated 1763 with the initials PW1, may be an addition to an earlier building.
Two storeys. Asymmetrical front; one window to the left of the porch, two to the right, C20 shop window and shop door in the centre below the porch which is carried on four timber posts. C19 panelled front door with rectangular fanlight. Variety of timber sashes with glazing bars.
Interior not inspected but may have features of interest.
Bridge House, with its picturesque front elevation is in a crucial position in the centre of Thorverton.

Notification that following the completion of an assessment of the building and taking into account all representations made, the entry for the house has been amended to include the roadside wall and gate piers.
The List entry for Bridge House, an C18 or earlier dwelling, was recommended for amendment for the following principal reasons:
Clarity: to provide an updated List entry that will better reflect the building's special interest and provide a more useful tool for its future management; to include the associated roadside wall and gate piers in the List entry.

Summary
Detached house and former shop. At least mid-18th century, though probably earlier, and including a shop from at least 1815. Mid- to late-19th century repairs and alterations; further alterations and additions in the twentieth and early twentieth first centuries. The boundary wall to the roadside dates from around the turn of the twentieth century.
Reasons for Designation
Bridge House, an C18 or earlier dwelling, its roadside wall and gate piers are listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
Architectural interest: the house is a good example of a C18 or earlier domestic building which is representative of the vernacular building traditions of the area; it has a good level of survival, both externally and internally.
Historic interest: its former use as a butcher’s shop and the inscriptions on the roadside wall contribute to the social history of Thorverton and the national effort during the First World War.
