Compton Castle SX865647
An account of Compton Castle written in 1905 records that 'about 16 feet in front of the central doorway stands the triangular base and part of the shaft of an ancient stone cross'. At present there is nothing resembling a cross in the position mentioned. Restorations began with the removal of the ivy in the early 1930s and culminated with the rebuilding of the hall and other refurbishments from the 1950s onwards. An earlier description of the castle aroused controversy over the existence of a platform for a stone cross in front of the main entrance,. Whether or not it ever existed, it could have been removed and reused during restoration.
