Full description

Department of Environment, 1972, Tiverton, 16 (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV52494.

Nos 12-32 (even), 32a, 34 and 36, Castle Street. Early to mid 19th century, two storey, some with attic. Red brick, some stuccoed and painted, mainly sash windows with centre glazing bars only. Nos 28, 30 and 32, doorcases with pilasters.

Formerly Listed as: Castle Street (West side) Nos.12 to 32 (even), No.32A, Nos.34 and 36.
Two small terraced houses with central passageway, circa 1840s. Flemish bond brick front, No.26 Stuccoed, stone rubble rear walls. End chimney stacks are brick and the roof is of natural slate. Each house is double-depth in plan and one room wide, heated by end stacks. No.24 is two rooms wide at first-floor level, presumably with a flying freehold over the passageway. Exterior: two storeys high plus basement/cellar at No.24. Almost symmetrical three-window front. Plank front door to No.26 with horned 12-pane sash alongside to right. Replacement front door to No.24 with similar unhorned sash to left. Open passageway between front doors. The first floor has three two-light eight-pane casement windows positioned over the ground-floor sash windows and passageway entrance respectively. Iron grille over the cellar light at No.24. There are structural tie bars either side of the passageway. Interior: not inspected but may retain features of interest.
