At the beginning of the 16th century extensive developments took place at Keynedon Barton. The open area to the front of the house was enclosed on its fourth side by a curtain wall containing a gateway or gatehouse, creating a more formal entrance court. Later in the 16th century crenellations were added to this wall and a new crenellated side wall was added, which screened and excluded the threshing barn on the south side of the forecourt. A high wall fronts the outer courtyard, built of high quality slate ashlar with occasional putlog holes, on a chamfered plinth. A bead and cavetto moulded string course finishes the top, but no stonework survives above this level. Aligned on the front door of the house is a wide gateway with heavy double roll-moulded jambs. To the south of the gate is a scar where a wall flanking the gateway has been removed, which may have formed the south wall of a gatehouse. At the south of the surviving curtain wall, remains of a wall walk are traceable, which descend via a flight of steps to ground level.

The battlemented wall still shows on the south side but on the north it has been concealed by the building of the barn probably in the l7th century. The moulded jambs of the main gate on the east side still survive as high as the springing and the wall to the side of it has a chamfered plinth and moulded string.
