Full description

Building marked as a Post Office.

Former toll house on the south side of the square, next to Rainbow House. Built for the South Molton Turnpike Trust in the 19th century.

The Toll-House. Former toll-house, now private house. Early C19. Partially rendered stone rubble. Hipped slate roof. Plan: Asymmetrical 2 room plan, backing onto Rainbow House at the junction of Fore Street and New Street.
Exterior: 2 storeys. 5 sided, the principal entrance front with 2 window range. C20 casements. Plank door with segmental pointed overlight with Gothick glazing pattern and central female head keystone. Facet at right end facing Fore Street has Gothick style pointed arched window on each floor with intersecting glazing bars and 3 light casements, 3 panes per light.
Interior: A blocked doorway through to Rainbow House indicates the Toll-House at one time formed part of the adjoining property and in the mid to late C19 was used as a sorting office when Rainbow House operated as the town post office.
