Rock Park was left to the Mayor and Aldermen of Barnstaple, their heirs and successors by William Rock. Ruined cottages, a factory and yard and an old limekiln were demolished to make way for the park which was opened with great public celebration in August 1879. An obelisk at the entrance marks the opening. Today the park is owned by Barnstaple Town Council and managed by the Rock Park Trust Management Committee.
