112-121 Pilton Street. Terrace of 10 houses. 1888 (datestone). Flemish bond yellow brick; natural slate roof; stacks with yellow brick shafts with cogged cornices and old pots. Symmetrical terrace, Nos 118 & 119 (in the centre), larger with paired doors towards the centre; terrrace has concave curve at Nos 120 & 121. Nos 122 & 123 (qv) are probably part of the same design but are detached and larger. 2 storeys. More architectural detail than might be expected from a terrace of this size. 20-window range, 2 windows to each house. Moulded brick eaves brackets; roughcast platband interrupted by first-floor window cills. Each house has a doorcase with a keyblock within a segmental-headed hoodmould; front door with a fanlight with spoke glazing (most front doors renewed but No.120 has a plank door which may be original). Ground-floor windows have segmental-headed arches and keyblocks held within square-headed hoodmoulds with carved corbels. Windows glazed with 2-pane sashes with margin panes. First-floor windows similarly glazed with moulded stone lintels. Nos 118 & 119, in the centre, are designed as a pair with a coped gable in the centre with the date of 1888 above nowy-headed louvred openings. Front doors together in the centre have coped gables on shallow corbelled projections and triangular overlights. Ground-floor windows match those of the rest of the terrace, roughcast platband has grisaille ornament. First floor has string course rising to meet corbelled hoods over first-floor windows which are glazed with 2-pane sashes with margin panes. INTERIOR: not inspected but may retain features of interest. This is a characteristic late C19 Barnstaple terrace, in an important conservation area with more external decoration than might be expected and a symmetrical design with parallels to several early C19 terraces in the town. Included for group value.
