Full description
Historic England, 2024, National Heritage List for England (National Heritage List for England). SDV365835.
Hillmans in Winkleigh is an early to mid 17th centruy house, possibly with earlier origins and 18th century extensions. Rendered cob and rubble walls with a gable-ended thatch roof.
Plan: Two-room-and-through-passage front range . Two long rear wings extend behind either end, the left-hand one is at least partly 17th century as doorways of this date lead into it from the house on the 1st floor so presumably at least part of it had a domestic purpose; the other wing was probably wholly for use as outbuildings and is more likely to be 18th century.
Exterior: Two storeys with a Tudor type door at centre.
Interior: The ground floor exhibits few original features but the original fireplaces are likely to survive behind 20th century blocking. On the first floor, three 17th century chamfered doorframes survive. The roof timbers are insubstantial straight principals and probably date from the 18th or 19th century.
