At one time, a ferry between Teignmouth and Newton Abbot was the only public means of communication between the two towns. It was owned by a Mary Davis (nee Heath) who gave her name to the lane which is now called Queen Street.

Full description
Lake, W. C., 1890, Notes on the Origin of the Streets of Teignmouth, and on their Nomenclature, 117 (Article in Serial). SDV291838.
Queen street was at one time known as Mary Heath's Lane, as in it lived Mrs. Davis, usually called by her maiden name of Heath, who owned a market boat which plied daily between Teignmouth and Newton, the only public means of communication between the two towns.
