Full description

Dudley, E. R., 1978, The Cottage, 17 French Street, Teignmouth (Worksheet). SDV350570.

Site visit during October or November 1978.
Interior renovation October 1978.
Level urban site in town. Sand base.
Stone walls surmounted by cob. Random rubble. Two room. Cross passage with partition with staircase infill (removed).
Partition: jointed transverse beam - vertical studs mortised and tenoned into beam. Plaster infill.
Floor: wooden and concrete on shingle on sand.
Fireplace: infilled. Asymmetric in north wall.
Stacks: two end stacks. Symmetrical elevation.
Roof: modern slate.
End wall: brick extension walls added on south-west end and north-east stack.
Projecting wing: two storey, rear of south-west end. Street level above foundations. Street rebuilt about 1750 after the French raid of 1690.
Artefacts: american clay pipe bowl; victorian pottery fragments; clay pipe stem pieces; charcoal; burnt sand; sea shells; victorian spring noose mousetrap; victorian wooden toilet seat; bone-handled fork; glass bottle.
