Summary

Moat at Monkwick Farmhouse.

Full description

Moat at Monkwick Farmhouse. The moat was levelled in the C17. At Domesday the farm supplied St Johns Abbey. <1> Incomplete, rectangular moat; sketch plan on back of MSRG card. <2> <3> The farm supplied the monks of St Johns Abbey, Colchester and the manor of which it formed part was granted to the abbey by its founder Eudo Dapifer in 1100. After the dissolution of the monasteries the manor was granted to John Stepnie, Stratford with reversion to John Dudley, Earl of Warwick and later Duke of Northumberland. Nothing is known of the early buildings on the site but tradition has it that there was a `watch tower' on the island in the fishpond. Sir Francis Jobson probably built or rebuilt the house and resided there in the time of Elizabeth I. <4> Known as Monk(e)wike in 1536, 1546. <5>
