Summary:Milestone on A377 in Bishop's Tawton about 50m uphill from the Methodist Church, on west side of road, against the wall. In good condition. The legend, '2 Barum' is picked out in white. Dates from c1879. Grid reference given as SS56402 30592. One of a set of milestones running from Barnstaple as far as Tollbar Cross, some 16 miles of road, placed in 1879 to commemorate the closure of the town's Turnpike Trust. Each of the stones bears the medieval Latin name of BARUM and are simple sombstone-shaped markers displaying a countdown of the miles away from the town.
